Sony 'my Xperia' App Tracks Missing Xperia Smartphones - IGN

Sometimes you just leave your smartphone behind in a bar; it happens. While iOS users have enjoyed the security of Find My iPhone for some time, Sony is now planning to launch a similar tracking service for its Xperia smartphones.

The Sony Mobile blog (via fonearena) published an interview with Sony Experience Planner Marcin Zielinski today, outlining the company's plans for "my Xperia." The service is nearly identical to Apple's Find My iPhone, providing a way to hunt down your missing Sony Xperia and remotely lock it, if necessary.

"We recognize that your Sony Xperia smartphone is equally as important as other valuables like wallets and keys, but it's also just as easily misplaced," said Zielinski. "The thinking behind the app is to anticipate those unpredictable situations, where your smartphone might end up lost or misplaced."

Using the "my Xperia" service requires installation of the app on your smartphone, and a Google account to sign into a web-based portal. From there, it's possible to find your Xperia smartphone on a map, wake the display, lock the device, and even erase all data.

The service is still in beta, currently only available in Scandinavian regions, but Sony plans to roll out "my Xperia" to its Xperia smartphones elsewhere in Q2.
