The latest figures from IDC are in for Q3 2012, and they show that Android is now on 75 per cent of smartphones shipped globally.
Yes, that means three out of four handsets now sold are Android phones, leaving the rest of the market effectively as a minority – much of which is cornered by the iPhone, of course, which was also up strongly.
The iPhone, however, is just one device compared to the legion of Androids.
Total Android shipments hit 136 million units in the third quarter, close to double that of last year, and an increase from a market share of 57 per cent to 75 per cent.
iOS (the iPhone) was the next most popular smartphone, hitting close to 27 million units and bagging a 15 per cent market share, which is very impressive for a sole device. And of course, Apple makes huge amounts of profit on each unit (particularly the more expensive iPhones at up to £700 a pop).
Indeed Apple was up 50 per cent year-on-year in terms of market share.
BlackBerry is holding on to third place, but slumped to a 4.3 per cent market share, down 35 per cent year-on-year. RIM really needs something special from BlackBerry 10 next year, but so much damage has been done, it's going to be a tough comeback to say the least.
Symbian is still hanging on in fourth place, on 2.3 per cent, with Windows Phone (and Windows Mobile) still failing to unseat it, with Microsoft on a 2 per cent market share. That said, Windows Phone is up 140 per cent year-on-year in terms of shipment volumes, and with Windows Phone 8 coming out, Microsoft is hoping for further acceleration.
There's only one runaway winner here, though, and that's Android.
