SOFTWARE DEVELOPER Microsoft has deployed updated Office Web Apps on its Skydrive storage service.
Microsoft's Skydrive service is a rival to Google Drive and Dropbox and has been given an updated suite of applications. The firm announced that it has rolled out updated versions of its Office Web Apps to Skydrive users.
Microsoft said its Office Web Apps - which include cut down versions of its Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Onenote applications - have been tweaked to work with Internet Explorer 10, Windows 8 and Apple's IOS 6. The firm said its latest release is all about adding editing and formatting controls that also work well on touchscreens.
The firm said its Word application now has support for viewing and adding comments, while users can print Excel files directly from the web browser. Microsoft said its Powerpoint application now allows co-authoring and comment support for collaboration while Onenote files can be shared through a URL.
Microsoft's Skydrive uses a cut down version of its subscription only Office Web Apps, allowing users to view and edit files that are stored on its cloud based storage service. While the firm's Office Web Apps are far from the full desktop versions, they incorporate the majority of popular basic features, although using them means that personal data is stored on Microsoft's servers. ยต
