Samsung's share of the tablet market has doubled, while Apple's iPad is on the slide.
Apple's slice fell from 51.7% to 43.6%, while Samsung's jumped from 7.3% to 15%.
Sales of Samsung Galaxy tablets hit 7.9million in the last quarter of 2012, compared to 2.2million in 2011, figures from research firm IDC have revealed.
But the iPad is still the best-selling tablet, with 22.9million bought.
Samsung's Galaxy S3 smartphone outsold the iPhone for the first time over Christmas, with 18million sales compared with Apple's 16.2million.
IDC spokesman Tom Mainelli said: "We expected a very strong fourth quarter, and the market didn't disappoint.
"New product launches from the category's top vendors, as well as new entrant Microsoft, led to a surge in consumer interest and very robust shipments totals during the holiday season."
Microsoft's much hyped Surface, powered by the Windows 8 system saw 900,000 tablets sold in the three months to the end of December, as it bubbled just outside the top five.
