iPhone 5S and 5C: You pay £549 for the new iPhone 5S, but they only cost £125 ... - Mirror.co.uk

While customers are paying from £549 for the new iPhones, they only cost $199 to make.

Research company IHS took apart the new iPhones and worked out how much each component cost.

Apple pays about $191 on the components to build one 16GB iPhone 5s unit.

It then costs another $8 to put them together, bringing the total cost to less than $200 (£125).

Despite the new A7 processor, fingerprint sensor and improved camera, the iPhone 5S costs less than the iPhone 5 - which cost $205.

The controversial new fingerprint sensor - which is being hailed by some as a new beginning for biometrics - costs just $7, according to IHS.

Boosting the storage from 16GB to 64GB only costs Apple $19, but it costs the consumer £200.

The iPhone 5C taken apart

Apple's second new iPhone - the iPhone 5C - costs slightly less to make, with Apple paying about $173 to build a 16GB model.

The iPhone 5S's high-speed processor and RAM is the reason behind its higher cost.
