Launching a new range of covers could give Apple an opportunity to branch out from its current design, which is clever but relatively old now. It might choose to mimic the Samsung's S View cover, which has a small window to allow you to see important information on the screen, even when the cover is on.
Alternatively, Apple might release a keyboard cover like the one that Microsoft offers for its Surface tablet, which doubles up as a screen protector and full qwerty keyboard. Until now Apple has relied on companies like Logitech to create iPad-friendly keyboards, but Apple may be keen to start tapping this demand itself.
Apple could also choose to match the fabric design on the iPad Mini smart covers. If it turns out that the new iPad features a fingerprint sensor like the iPhone 5s, this might also include a hole to allow Touch ID fingerprint access for quick unlocking.
Of course, it is also possible that Apple's invitation is referring to the iPad case itself, in which case it may be hinting that the new iPad 5 or iPad Mini 2 will come in a range of bright colours like the iPhone 5c. This has already been rumoured elsewhere, and could help Apple to compete in the growing market for low cost tablets.
The iPad 5 itself is rumoured to be up to an inch narrower than the iPad 4 and to come in the silver, gold and space grey colours of the iPhone 5S. It is also expected to feature a faster processor, an upgraded rear camera, and have Touch ID built into the home button.
Meanwhile, the iPad Mini 2 is expected to have a Retina display with a a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels and a 64-bit A7 processor. Some rumours claim that it will come in the same colours as the iPhone 5S, while other suggest it could be available in a range of bright colours, much like the iPhone 5c which was launched last month.
It is thought that the October 22 event could also see the launch of a new MacBook Pro with a Retina screen and improved battery life, as well as a new operating system for the Mac called OS X Mavericks, featuring tweaks to memory management and process handling which would extend the battery life on laptops.
