Pining for Sony's slim Xperia Z1 "Honami", or the gigantic Xperia Z Ultra, or maybe even the newly announced Xperia Z1 f "Honami mini", but are buried far too deep in your older device's data and apps? Worry not as Sony has just released Xperia Transfer 3.0 that will make it even easier to migrate your essential contacts, messages, files, and even apps to your brand new Sony Xperia device.
Knowing that a good number of would-be buyers hold of switching smartphones because of the data stored in their devices, Sony unveiled Xperia Transfer last March to entice consumers to purchase of a Sony Xperia device by making the jump from one device to another as painless as possible. The service, which is a feature found in Sony's PC Companion and Bridge for Mac software, allowed owners of iPhones, BlackBerrys, and Android devices running Android 2.1 or later to migrate their data with a few simple clicks.
The original version of the app was already quite powerful, allowing data such as contacts, SMS and MMS, music, photos, videos to be transferred from one device to a Sony Xperia smartphone. It could even transfer apps if possible. Now at version 3.0, Xperia Transfer is getting some new features aside from the usual performance and user interface changes. Among these is the ability to recommend Google Play equivalents of apps that are being migrated to the new Xperia device. It should be noted that data that are pulled from online services won't be transferred. Here's the original launch video that describes how Xperia Transfer works.
As mentioned, Xperia Transfer 3.0 is part of Sony's desktop software suite, so no need to download a separate app if you already have it installed. Sony has also now released an Xperia Transfer app for Android to help with the migration from an Android device. Both are available from the download links below.
