iPad 5 release date, specs, and features - Know Your Mobile

Apple iPad 5 is tipped to launch later this month –– October –– alongside the iPad Mini 2 with Retina Display.

Physical changes to the design of the iPad 5 as well as component updates are all-but confirmed with plenty of sources confirming an iPad Mini-like bezel and the inclusion of Apple's 64-bit A7 chipset.

Ahead of launch we'll be collating all of our iPad 5 coverage inside this Hub article. We've already seen plenty of leaks so far, leaks that show off the new design and potential new colour schemes, as you can see below, but there'll likely be plenty more as we approach launch day.

Below is everything we currently know about Apple's forthcoming iPad 5.

The iPad Mini 2 and iPad 5 are tipped to launch later this month and today we've been treated to a selection of HD images of the two tablets' outer shells.

We're still none the wiser about whether the iPad Mini 2 will feature a Retina Display but, thanks to these images, at least we know one thing –– the iPad 5 will look distinctly different to the iPad 4 with its iPad Mini-like bezel.

The images come via Sonny Dickson, the man behind all those iPhone 5C leaks, and show both the iPad Mini 2 and the iPad 5 from a variety of angles.

No one knows how Dickson gets his hands on Apple products ahead of launch. One theory posited by SlashGear is that Dickson purchases the shells from manufacturers within Apple's supply chain network.

The iPad Mini 2 is tipped to feature Apple's A6 processor, come in the same colours as the iPhone 5S, and potentially feature TouchID – although nothing has yet been confirmed.

The iPad 5 – being a flagship product – is likely to feature Apple's 64-bit A7 processor, TouchID and an updated camera –– most likely the one from the iPhone 5S.

The iPad Mini 2 and iPad 5 will likely carry the same pricing structure as their predecessors.

The only question now is whether or not the iPad Mini 2 will get a Retina Display?

iPad event scheduled for October 22, according to AllThingsD

Apple will be hosting an iPad event on October 22 which will more than likely turn out to be the launch of the iPad 5 (and possibly the iPad Mini 2), according to reputable news source AllThingsD.

The site reports to have heard from "people familiar with Apple's plans," although everything is unofficial at this point of course. Another prominent bearer of launch news, The Loop, asserted that AllThingsD's report was correct, adding further weight to the idea.

It's still not clear at this point whether it will be dual launch for both the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2, but it seems probable we will at least see the iPad 5 on that date. All current rumours suggest the iPad 5 is on track for a launch this year, while iPad Mini 2 rumours are conflicted on whether the smaller model will arrive in 2013 or will be delayed until 2014.

Leaked iPad 5 parts suggest Touch ID fingerprint scanner

We've seen rumours before about the iPad 5 (and indeed the iPad Mini 2) being fitted with the iPhone 5S's Touch ID fingerprint scanner under the Home key.

Previously, Apple suppliers in Asia said Sapphire Crystal Home keys were being sourced to replace the old plastic design, just like with the iPhone 5S.

Now, lending further weight to the allegations, the iPad 5's "ribbon cable" has leaked online and shows a very different design around the Home button section which could accomodate Apple's new fingerprint technology.

As usual with such leaks, which in this case emerged via Chinese source CtechCN, the legitimacy of the pictures can't be verified and it could be a fake.

However, it adds to the pile of growing evidence that we'll see Touch ID on all major Apple mobile devices.

And, such a move certainly makes sense if Apple is serious about fingerprint security, which it must be, considering it bought a company which specialises in it and then implemented said tech into its flagship iPhone 5S at what must have been considerable expense.

October 3 2013iPad 5 to feature enhanced camera hardware? The iPad 5 could be fitted with an improved camera sensor according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo's report claims that both the iPad Mini 2 and iPad 5 will launch in Q4 of 2013 with improved camera tech as a major marketing angle. The sensors will be improved in-line with the iPhone 5S, featuring an 8-megapixel iSight sensor and larger aperture.

It may also include software-based enhancements, such as the iPhone 5S's 120 frames-per-second slow-motion video capture.

iPad 5 "Space Gray" shell leaked online, detailed in video

It's looking increasingly likely that Apple's next-gen iPad range –– the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 –– will use the same colour scheme (Space Gray, Champagne Gold, and Silver) as the iPhone 5S.

In this latest leak we're presented with a back panel from the upcoming iPad 5. As you can see in the video below, the back panel uses Apple's Space Gray colour scheme. It is also significantly more compact than the iPad 4.

Apple is expected to launch the iPad 5 and the iPad Mini 2 (with Retina Display) later this month. The new iPad 5 will likely feature Apple's A7 chipset, a slimmer iPad Mini-like bezel, and a slimmer overall profile.

It is unclear at present whether Apple will introduce its TouchID fingerprint scanner aboard the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2.

New-look iPad 5 shown off in detailed video

The iPad 5 is expected to keep the same size display as previous models (9.7-inches) but feature a slimmer bezel like the iPad Mini that'll make the device quite a bit smaller than its predecessor, the iPad 4.

Chinese parts supplier sw-box.com posted video and photos of the upcoming the slate-gray enclosure of the upcoming iPad 5 ahead of launch. Additional reports suggest that Apple might ramp up the memory inside the iPad 5 –– perhaps upwards of 2GB –– and the inclusion of the A7 chipset is also likely.

Sw-box lists has also compared the iPad 5's dimensions to the iPad 4's, and at 169.50mm x 239.20mm VS. 185.70mm x 241.2mm, the iPad 5 is quite a bit trimmer than its predecessor.

According to a report from Digitimes, component suppliers in Taiwan have alleged that Apple is fitting sapphire crystal Home buttons to the forthcoming iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2. The claims give rise to the idea that Apple may be looking to include its new Touch ID fingerprint scanners on its latest tablet devices.

Apple introduced the iPhone 5S in early September with the Touch ID scanner and the new technology on the company's smartphone is protected by a sapphire crystal button. While DigiTimes' report doesn't explicitly state that Apple will be using Touch ID in its tablets there seems to be little other reason to use the reinforced material in this way.

Plus, continuing the same functionality across its products is certainly in keeping with Apple's modus operandi, particularly as the feature is a bid to make the company's devices more secure and therefore appealing to business users and there are tie-ins with purchases made on Apple's iTunes content store.

Another interesting point in the report is that Apple is allegedly considering switching out the iPhone's Gorilla Glass front panel with the more durable sapphire crystal, but is running up against a bit of an obstacle on price. Again, nothing is mentioned about the tablets, and if price is a stumbling block on the smaller scale you can be sure it would be for the 7.9-inch and 9.7-inch tablet devices. Apparently even the button swap increases the cost over plastic by a factor of five.

Reports indicate that, as per previous rumours, Apple is still expected to reveal the 9.7-inch iPad 5 alongside its smaller 7.9-inch iPad Mini 2 cousin at an event in October, with October 15 being suggested by some. The iPad Mini 2 is not expected to change much in design but could feature a higher-resolution Retina display if claims are to be believed, while the iPad 5 is thought to be slimmer, lighter and more compactly designed, with an aesthetic which mimics the iPad Mini on the larger scale.

iPad 5 front panel leaks in hands-on pictures

Sonny Dickson has leaked pictures of the iPad 5's front panel in white, showing a thinner bezel, but pretty much the same format as the iPad 4.

iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 photos show aluminium rear shell

New pictures of the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 have appeared online, showing the same aluminium casing we've seen before.

The iPad 5 seems closer in size to the iPad Mini, thanks to what we expect to be a thinner bezel.

iPad Mini 2 and iPad 5 release date drafted as October

The iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 with Retina display could launch together by the end of October.

According to a report on Bloomberg, Apple will launch the two tablets in tandem to try and regain control over the market.

Apple is already rumoured to be launching the iPhone 5S and iPhone Light at an event on September 10, so it looks like a busy Q4 for the iDevice maker.

The iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 are both said to be thinner and lighter than last year's releases and the iPad 5's design will move closer to that of the iPad Mini.

iPad 5 display pictures leak, showing thinner bezels

The iPad 5's front panel has leaked in a number of pictures, showing off thinner bezels, a hole for the homescreen button and a front-facing camera at the top.

The first picture, leaked by MacFixit Australia, shows the panel on top of bubble wrap. The bezel is black and the design looks squarer than the current iPad, although that could be down to the perspective of the shot.

The website claims to be a supplier of iPhone, iPad and iPod accessories and the caption alongside the product listing says, 'So it looks like we've got a preview of the replacement screen for the iPad 5 which is not even out yet!.'

Macrumours has revealed the part number stamped on the panel is 821-1892-02, which fits in nicely with Apple's component number format.

The screen has previously been rumoured to measure the same 9.7-inches as the iPad 4 although without anything next to the panel to compare it to, it's a little hard to tell.

Another iPad 5 picture leaked on the internet too, showing some screen connector cables too. They look shorter than on the iPad 4's screen connector, although AppleInsider has speculated this is because the whole internal structure of the next iPad will be compressed to make it thinner.

iPad 5 and plastic iPhone Light revealed in videos

The iPad 5 and iPhone Light have been showcased on video.

The iPad 5 video shows thinner bezels as previously rumoured, with an aluminium backing.

The build of the iPad 5 looks identical to that shown in leaked photos last week, complete with embossed Apple logo on the back. The camera is in the top left side on the back and mute slider and volume keys are below that.

The iPhone Light video is a little more detailed, describing the device as the iPhone 5C.

The device looks longer and thinner than the iPhone 5, with a white plastic casing. The camera is in exactly the same location as on the iPhone 5, with a flash next to it.

There's a Nano-SIM tray on the right side of the device and a front-facing camera on the front.

On top, there's the power key, along the bottom is the speaker with the Apple Lightning port and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

iPad 5 concepts show sleek design against iPad 4

A new set of iPad 5 renders have appeared and show a very sleek looking finish against the iPad 3.

The concept, thought up by Martin Hajek on Concept Phones, shows an iPad with a soft-touch rear panel, slimmer bezels and curvier edges.

This first picture shows a black rear, with a shiny Apple logo in the centre, Lightning connector at the bottom and a camera at the top. Previous rumours have suggested the iPad 5 will feature an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera.

This top-on-top comparison shows the iPad 5 is slightly smaller than the iPad 3, with dual speakers at the bottom. It's not totally clear which is thinner, because the iPad 4's pointed edges make it look thinner.

The screen on the iPad 5 looks to be the same size as the iPad 3's just with a smaller bezel.

Side-by-side, it's clear the side bezels are smaller than on the iPad 3, yet the top and bottom bezels are the same size. Could this mean Apple will be using the top and bottom bezels for something a little special, say, an extension of the screen as was rumoured before?

It's when the iPad 3 and iPad 5 are behind each other that the difference in size becomes clear. The iPad 5 is noticeably thinner than the iPad 3. This shot also shows plastic, raised buttons for the volume and power on/off.

Again, side on, we can see the iPad 5 is thinner than the iPad 3. It also shows the extra height on the iPad 3.

This last shot shows the much more angualr shape of the iPad 5. Although it still has curves, it's a lot squarer in design and looks more like the iPad Mini as previously predicted.
