Windows Phone 8 won't run on handsets released in 2011 but has been shown to work perfectly well on the HTC HD2, which was originally released in 2009.
Running on a single core 1GHz processor, HTC's HD2 handset originally launched on Windows Mobile 6.5 and has been hacked to run Windows Phone 7, Windows Phone 7.5, Android, and now Windows Phone 8.
A mod team known as Dark Forces Team (DFT) have successfully ported Windows Phone 8 onto the aging device, according to WPCentral, which reports that 'only a handful of photos showing what looks to be an earlier build of Windows Phone 8 running on the HD2 are given as evidence.'
If the hack is legitimate then it means the modders at DFT have somehow managed to snake their way around Windows Phone 8's Bitlocker security – a form of security that is reportedly tied to a physical chip on the device, something that the HD2 is missing.
DFT did not disclose how this was achieved, with details of the actual hack being fairly scant at present. There isn't even a video at this stage, which doesn't do much for the team's claim that it has successfully ported the OS over.
Nonetheless if does turn out to be legit then it could open up a lot of doors for devices like the Lumia 900 and HTC Titan by offering a method of getting Windows Phone 8 installed on them.
We'll be keeping a close eye on this one…
