Apple stores have started to run out of the new iPhone 5S within an hour of it going on sale, reports say.
The iPhone 5S and its cheaper 5C model went on sale at 8am but technology experts were reporting some stores had sold out of the £709 5S in Cardiff, London and Cambridge within an hour.
Mobile giant O2 did not have any 5S phones to sell at all, telling customers it would take orders but might not be able to deliver them for another three to six weeks. Similar shortages were reported in the US and elsewhere around the world.
Staff at the Apple store on Regent Street gave golden tickets to those waiting in the queue, but stopped when they reached the number of handsets the shop had available. Twitter users are reporting that shops in Liverpool and Cardiff sold out of the 5S shortly after opening this morning.
Customers who had missed out on the 5S were initially being offered the cheaper - and so far less-popular - 5C iPhone as a consolation.
But by mid-morning, reports were emerging that some of its models were selling out too.
The 5C comes in a number of different colours and online orders for some of the white, red, yellow and green models are being pushed back into late September.
