While HP was launching a handful of new tablets, as well as an innovative new laptop, it also decided to put the two formats together for three new convertible notebooks that are becoming increasingly common Windows 8 portable devices.
At the lower end of the pricing spectrum, HP is introducing two Pavilion x2 models, one with an 11-inch screen and the other with a 13-inch display. The Pavilion 11 x2 will make use of Intel's forthcoming Bay Trail Atom processor, with either 64GB or 128GB of onboard storage. As befits a bigger-screened portable, the Pavilion 13 x2 will offer more powerful processor options in the form of either an AMD A6 or an Intel Haswell CPU.
Additional storage for the Pavilion 13 x2 can come courtesy of an optional 500GB hard drive built into the keyboard dock piece of the system. That dock also includes an extra battery. Unfortunately, its larger screen has the same resolution (1,366x768) as the one on the Pavilion 11 x2.
Both Pavilion x2 devices will run Windows 8.1 when they launch on November 17. At a starting price of $599.99, they won't break the bank, but they're significantly more than the similar (if smaller) Asus Transformer Book T100 convertible, which will be priced from $349.
A higher-end hybrid comes in the form of the Spectre 13 x2, an Ultrabook that's notable for its fanless chassis. The 13.3-inch screen packs full 1080p HD resolution (1,920x1,080) and, like the Pavilion 13 x2, features Intel Haswell processors and a keyboard dock with built-in battery. But its build quality is higher, using more aluminum than plastic, and is thin and light enough to qualify for Intel's Ultrabook designation.
Of course, you'll pay more -- much more -- for the premium features and design. The Spectre 13 x2 will start at $1,099 when it's released next month.
