Windows Phone 8 launch live coverage - ITBusiness.ca

Windows Phone 8 launch live coverage

Hot on the heels of its Windows 8 launch event in New York, Microsoft Corp. is launching Windows Phone 8 from a San Francisco event Oct. 29 at 1:00 PM ET.

Tune in here for a live video stream of the event and Twitter commentary from ITBusiness.ca editor Brian Jackson. We'll be watching the event from Microsoft's offices in Toronto and will have hands-on coverage of the first hardware to run on Windows Phone 8 following the live event.

Hardware manufacturers HTC and Nokia have both announced they will be offering Windows Phone 8 handsets in early November.

HTC is using similar hardware to its premium Android devices.

HTC announced the Windows Phone 8X Sept. 19. It will feature a 4.3-inch touch screen with a 1.5 GHz processor and an 8 MP camera (similar to specs seen on the HTC One X that runs Android). The phones are available in several colours and feature a Beats Audio sound system. The One S is similar, with some scaled down specs.

Nokia's Lumia 920 may be considered the flagship device for Windows Phone 8.

Nokia announced the Lumia 820 and 920 Sept. 5. The 920 model has a 4.5-inch touch screen with a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon processor. It has 1 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage space. The camera is 8.7 megapixels and uses Nokia PureView technology, which Nokia says delivers images close to SLR quality.

Microsoft's previous attempt to gain traction in the smartphone market with Windows Phone 7 and 7.5 has been less than impressive despite a partnership with Nokia. Worldwide smartphone share in the second quarter of 2012 for Windows Phone was just 3.5 per cent, trailing behind even the defunct Symbian OS.

Watch here on Monday to see what Windows Phone 8 will look like and how Microsoft plans to grab more market share.
