TAIWANESE PHONE MAKER HTC reportedly has scrapped plans to release a large-screened Windows Phone 8 smartphone due to the Microsoft mobile operating system's lack of support for high enough display resolutions.
That's according to Bloomberg, which reports that HTC isn't pleased with Windows Phone 8's screen resolution support. The latest iteration of Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system supports 480x640, 480x800, 720x1280 and 768x1280 screen resolutions, but for HTC these aren't high enough for its planned Windows Phone 'phablet' device.
Citing a person familiar with the now defunct project, Bloomberg reports that HTC has decided to stick with Google's Android mobile operating system instead.
This does mean, though, that we can expect to see an HTC branded rival to Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 smartphone, which might well debut at CES in January. Either that, or the report refers to the Android powered HTC Butterfly, which HTC launched in Japan and comes with a 5in Super LCD 1920x1080 screen.
Don't get too excited though, as HTC has said that it has no plans to bring the phone to the UK, a move that could help the firm finally compete against Apple and Samsung and might help turn around the company's struggling financial performance.
HTC declined to comment on the rumours. ยต
