Apple's iconic iPhone may have been called TelePod, Mobi or TriPod - The Sun

A FORMER Apple ad man has revealed that possible names for the now iconic iPhone included – the TelePod, Mobi and TriPod.

Tech insider Ken Segall revealed that even the name iPad was considered for the phone, before Apple boss Steve Jobs decided on the now familiar iPhone tag.

Telepod was among the front runners as it sounded futuristic as well as being similar to telephone, he said.

And the word TriPod stemmed from the fact that iPhone combined a phone, iPod and internet device – something which Jobs hammered home several times when he unveiled the gadget.

Segall delivered the inside scoop to marketing students during a talk at the University of Arizona in the US.

He said: "TelePod was meant to be a sci-fi twist on the word telephone.

"The company was already riding on the popularity of the iPod, so TelePod wasn't too much of a departure."

He also described how in 2007, Apple was battling tech company Cisco Systems over rights to the iPhone name, which it had called one of its phones.

While the companies tried to hammer out a compromise, Apple asked its staff to think up some alternative monikers.

The firms eventually settled their dispute and Apple was free to release its revolutionary phone in June 2007.
