Fresh reports claim that Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S3 are being swept up six times faster than iPhones like the recent iPhone 5.
Analyst Mary Meeker of KPCB gave a half-term update on internet trends to a San Francisco crowd recently, as reported by Tech Crunch, and there were some interesting figures. Chief among them was the above assertion that Android adoption rates have grown to six times that of iPhone - that's up from four times in Meeker's previous report of May 2012.
Of course, there are considerably more Android phones released each year than iOS phones, but but it's the growth that's noteworthy.
Other exciting points include the fact that Android has now overtaken Windows to become the number one OS for internet enabled devices - in terms of units shipped, at least. Of course, in terms of installed devices PCs in general still trump smartphones and tablets, but Meeker expects that balance to finally tilt the other way by the end of the second quarter of 2013 despite the launch of Windows 8.
Meanwhile, by the end of 2013 Meeker predicts that there will be 160 million Android devices shipped per quarter versus 100 million Windows devices and 80 million iOS devices.
Speaking of Apple, Meeker notes that iPad adoption is growing in relation to iPhone adoption - five times faster, to be precise. That's up from three times in May.
If you're continuing under the impression that we're now living in a smartphone world, consider this stat: there are one billion smartphone users in the world, but five billion mobile phone users. This means that cheaper feature phones are still the predominant global platform in 2012 - particularly in developing countries, where smartphones are still considered too expensive.
All in all a very rosy picture for Google and its Android platform, which looks set to increase its domination over the coming months and years.
