This week is chock full of exciting post-CES reveals. First up was Sony's announcement this morning of its ulta-thin Xperia Tablet Z, and now it's been confirmed that Samsung's Galaxy Note 8-incher exists and is set for a worldwide debut at Mobile World Congress in late February.
The confirmation comes straight from Jong-Kyun Shin, president of Samsung's mobile communications business (famous for his "without Samsung, iPhone wouldn't exist" comments), and reported by iNews24 with translation by Engadget.
Rather than being an up-sized Galaxy Note II, the Galaxy Note 8 will be a slimmed-down version of Samsung's 10-inch slate, complete with its signature S-Pen stylus. Whether it will boast LTE or any type of cellular support is unknown.
You may be asking "why 8 inches instead of the typical 7-inch tablet?" Samsung already has the 7-inch spectrum covered with its Galaxy Tab line, but here's the real answer: Apple's iPad Mini clocks in at 7.9 inches.
The Note smartphone line has had tremendous even unexpected success since it launched 14 months ago, giving birth to the "phablet" form-factor and ratcheting up the average size of our portable screens. The Note 10.1 made its debut at 2012?s Mobile World Congress, and saw a U.S. release later in August.
Whether or not Samsung's iPad Mini competitor succeeds will certainly rest with its price tag and internal specs. We'll know both of these things in late February.
