Sony beats HTC to take number two spot in UK Android space - Know Your Mobile (blog)

HTC, once the poster boy of all things Android, has been relegated to third place after being overtaken by Sony during Q3 2012, according to new stats.

'Latest figures show the Xperia manufacturer overtook HTC during the summer, selling 500,000 Android units in the UK to HTC's 440,000, although both lost market share to Samsung, with its Android sales standing at 3.2 million,' reports Mobile Magazine

Sony's quick ascension inside the space is impressive, but it's nothing compared to the void between second place and Samsung, which is shifting Android handsets at an unprecedented rate.

Speaking to Mobile, Pierre Perron (pictured), UK MD of Sony Mobile, said: 'All sources are confirming the same trend – that we are jumping into second place in the UK Android segment.'

The gap between HTC and Sony isn't that much, just 60,000 units, but it'll certainly be cause for concern for the Taiwanese-based manufacturer, which was once the UK's biggest Android manufacturer by a country mile.

Perron also added fuel to the idea that Sony may also release smartphones that aren't Android-powered, which could only mean one thing: Windows Phone 8.

'We are discussing other alternatives [to Android] and we are open to other possibilities providing the platform enables us to build on that tradition,' added Perron.

Sony's next flagship device, codenamed Odin, is expected to launch in Q1 2013 at either Mobile World Congress 2013 or CES 2013. The device is said to feature a 1080p display, Android Jelly Bean, and one of Qualcomm's quad-core S4 Pro chipsets.
