JAPANESE PHONE MAKER Sony has revealed that it will start rolling out Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to a handful of its Xperia devices soon, including its flagship Xperia T smartphone.
Speaking on Twitter, the firm revealed that Google's latest mobile operating system will be arriving on the Sony Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V, with a rollout in the first quarter of 2013. There's no word on which other Sony phones will be getting the upgrade, but it's unlikely that its 2011 Xperia phones will be getting bumped to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
Still, it's not all bad news for non-Xperia T owners, as Sony has also announced that it will roll out an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update to handsets including the Xperia P, Xperia U and Xperia Go.
While only a minor update, it brings a handful of new features to the mid-range smartphones, including improvements to the handsets' stability, WiFi tethering, camera, NFC and messaging.
Sony said it has started rolling out the update but it might take a few weeks to appear on all smartphones. Those with handsets already running Android 4.0 ICS will receive a notification when the update is available, while those with phones still running Android 2.3 Gingerbread will have to hook the phone up to a computer to check. ยต
