If you've wanted to embrace Windows 8 without spending serious coin, today is the final day to take advantage of the $40 upgrade special being offered from the Windows Store.
Beginning tomorrow, February 1, a Windows 8 upgrade will climb to $199.99 for the Pro version and $119.99 for the standard version.
Microsoft has given users more freedom in the installation process of their touch-enhanced OS, meaning you can purchase the upgrade today and install it whenever it's convenient for you. Simply run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant and when prompted, select the option to install Windows 8 by creating media (see image, left). From there you can create a bootable USB stick or DVD to install at a later date, with your Windows license validated.
I can't wholeheartedly recommend Windows 8 unless you have a touch-based device or monitor, or at the very least a mouse or trackpad that supports gestures. The OS simply feels neutered and unintuitive without touch.
If you're in the market for such a device, consider exploring Lenovo's ThinkPad Yoga or this touch-driven VivoBook from ASUS. There's also the unique swivel design of Dell's XPS 12, which I reviewed in detail here.
