A Microsoft spin-out is trying to tempt open-sourcers to its owner's cloud with a catalogue of Azure-friendly open code.
Microsoft Open Technologies has announced VM Depot, a site it calls: "A community-driven catalog of preconfigured operating systems, applications, and development stacks that can easily be deployed on Windows Azure."
VM Depot is designed to let you create and share images of Linux-based virtual machines using Azure APIs. Out of the gate the pickings are thin: just four pages that include images for versions of Ruby, Drupal, WordPress, Tomcat and Jenkins on Ubuntu and for Debian.
The idea seems to be to get more open-source apps running on Linux as a guest on the Windows cloud, and help catch up with Amazon.
Microsoft Open Technologies was announced in April 2012 as wholly owned subsidiary of Redmond run by the software giant's Interoperability Strategy team.
At the time, Microsoft said its unit would "advance the company's investment in openness – including interoperability open standards and open source." VM Depot seems to be the group's first offering. ®
