With only a day to go until Apple unveils what is expected to be its next-generation of iPads, speculation about a new Nokia phablet has surfaced.

If the rumours turn out to be true it would mean almost all the major phone and tablet companies will have released, or be about to release, new devices in the run up to Christmas - creating fierce competition among the retailers.

Nokia is set unveil what's been dubbed Lumia 1520 at an event in Abu Dhabi the same day Apple will be announcing its own new products in London and California.

Both events will also coincide with the official release of Microsoft's Surface 2 tablet.

The Nokia rumours come from leaked images and details that appeared on a Chinese website over the weekend.

It's described as arriving in 'October 2013' and has a 6-inch 1080p screen with a 20MP PureView camera.

It may also come with a 6.7-MP main camera and 2.0-MP front-facing camera.

Microsoft announced its Surface 2 tablets last month and they officially go on sale tomorrow.

Reports in July suggested Microsoft lost around $900m due to poor sales of its original Surface devices.

Called the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, the latest tablets run the latest Windows 8.1 operating system - which caused its own problems at the weekend when the update was pulled over security problems.

After months of rumours, Apple confirmed it would be holding a launch on Tuesday by sending invites to journalists last week entitled 'We still have a lot to cover.'

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS WEEK'S LAUNCHES

APPLE

Experts believe the tech giant could be about to announce a new iPad mini and an improved iPad - dubbed iPad 5.

It's likely the iPad mini 2 will keep the current 7.9-inch screen and not drop to 7-inches, in a bid to stay slightly bigger than Google's Nexus 7, Tesco's new Hudl and the MyTablet from Argos.

If Apple adds the Retina display seen on its new iPhones and larger iPads, its possible the second-generation iPad mini will be heavier and thicker.

The camera is due an upgrade, too, and it's thought Apple would move to an 8MP rear-facing lens, with the possibility of even a 12MP camera being added.

The iPad mini is expected to launch at around 269 for 16GB and then in 80 increments for the 32BG and 64GB models.

Models with 3G and 4G access will cost more.

Apple's 16GB iPad 5 is expected to cost around 399, this raises to 479 for 32GB and 559 for 64GB.

The current iPad mini came out in November 2012 and if Apple follows suit, this would confirm a mid-October announcement followed by an early-November sale date, in time for Christmas.

The price of the current iPads is also being cut in various regions, suggesting a new tablet is coming.

However, leaked photos of the casing suggest it will be thinner, meaning Apple may wait to add the high-definition display to later models.

According to Apple site, 9to5Mac, the rumoured iPad 5 will also keep the 9.7-inch, high-resolution screen seen on older models.

Technology site Expert Reviews believes Apple will stick with its traditional pricing strategy for both models and charge the same price for its new products as it did for the outgoing models.

For example, the 16GB iPad 5 is expected to cost around 399, this raises to 479 for 32GB and 559 for 64GB.

Apple need to do something new!

Anyone who does not have an Apple tablet in their life must have a pretty dull existence.

Ooh just when I was considering getting a new iPad

Yes, Christmas is always about squeezing every penny from the general populace so they can congratulate themselves on their sales performance and market share. Wouldn't it be great if everyone steered clear of technology, new sofas and crap like that till after January. At Christmas, we could all just spend it with family and friends, go to church and ignore Samsung, Apple, Sony, Microsoft, DFS just for a couple of months.

The tablet war is on ladies!!

The only one that I have mild interest is the Nokia. Microsoft and Apple are rubbish.

I wouldn't mind but the ipad1 i bought a couple of years ago cannot be updated apple said. Most apps have been updated to ios7 and wont work on my ipad anymore!! That's what i call a rip off.

I'm making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life. This is what I do..................................... WWW.Works25.Com

Thank god DM, I nearly thought that you didnt have an Apple advertisement today

Those who buy apple can't moan about energy prices.

Those that buy anything they don't need, chocolate, ciggerates, alcohol, junk food, expensive a cars, houses etc can't by that reasoning. Those that opt for Apple over a competitor at similar pricing is hardly financial crime of the century. My Samsung phone on contract was more than an iPhone at the time. Can I complain about energy prices?
