Apple: iPhone Software 'Redesign Revolution' - Sky News

Apple has unveiled what it calls the most revolutionary redesign of its mobile software since the iPhone was launched.

The company also introduced its music streaming service iTunes Radio, which will take on rivals including Pandora and Spotify.

Apple Inc unveiled the streaming service at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, where company officials also debuted the new iOS 7 operating system for its iPhones and iPads.

CEO Tim Cook says iTunes Radio, available in the US in the autumn, will customise users' music based on what they have listened to and what they have previously purchased on iTunes.

It will be free, with advertising content included in the audio - similar to other free streaming music services.

Subscribers to the iTunes Match service, which costs $25 a year, will get a commercial-free version of iTunes Radio.

The service also taps Apple's Siri virtual assistant to answer users spoken questions, such as "Who plays that song?".

Competition among streaming music services is heating up. Last month Google started its on-demand subscription music service, All Access, joining the existing Spotify, Rhapsody and other services.

Apple's new operating system for its smartphones and tablets includes new icons, typefaces and a transparent look to highlight underlying content.

Some industry experts have criticised Apple's mobile operating software as dated, as it has been largely unchanged since the iPhone's inception in 2007.

Apple also gave a peek at its new line of sleek Mac Pro computers, which will be available later this year.
