Windows Phone 8 has finally touched down and a slew of handsets have launched to showcase Microsoft's new mobile platform. Leading the Windows Phone 8 line-up are the Samsung ATIV S, Nokia Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X, all high-end devices and all bringing something new to the table, despite running the same operating system. Here's a rundown of the top features from the three front-runners...

Samsung ATIV S

Key Features:

  • 1.5GHz dual-core processor

  • 4.8-inch super AMOLED display

  • 8 megapixel autofocus camera

  • Samsung Photo Editor software

  • 1080p HD video capture

The Samsung ATIV S hasn't generated quite as much hype as the new Nokia Lumia range but that's not to say it isn't as worthy - it's a classy looking handset with a lot to offer. Taking style cues from the Samsung Galaxy S III, its classic, understated design sets it apart from the other Windows Phone 8 offerings. A 4.8 inch display kicks out stunning visuals whether viewing images, watching videos or simply admiring the colourful Windows Phone 8 Start screen. While the 8 mega-pixel autofocus camera isn't anything particularly special, the Windows Phone camera interface and photo options, including Samsung's own photo editing software, really helps. Bringing out the best of Windows Phone 8 the ATIV S is a great choice for anyone wanting all the new features paired with Samsung's iconic design.

Nokia Lumia 920

Key Features:

  • 4.5-inch IPS TFT PureMotion HD+ display

  • 1.5GHz dual-core processor

  • 8.7 megapixel camera

  • 1080p video capture with image stabilisation

  • Wireless charging capabilities

The Lumia 920 builds on the already impressive range from Nokia and although it shares the same unibody design as the Lumia 900, under the hood, it couldn't be more different. A 4.5 inch IPS TFT display with Nokia's PureMotion HD+ technology makes it the brightest and most sensitive screen of the bunch. Colours are sharp and dynamic, so it's great for viewing all manner of multimedia content. Nokia's PureView technology is integrated into the 8.7 mega-pixel camera and results in sharp images no matter what the light conditions. Video recording at 1080p is equally remarkable as blur and camera shakes are eliminated almost every time thanks to image stabilisation technology. Wireless charging functionality is also included, meaning that unsightly cables are a thing of the past.

HTC 8X

Key Features:

  • 4.3 inch SLCD 2 Gorilla Glass display

  • 1.5GHz dual-core processor

  • 8 megapixel camera

  • 2 megapixel wide angle front-facing camera

  • Beats Audio sound technology

The sleek HTC 8X brings a splash of colour with its polycarbonate chassis, similar to that seen on the Lumia range, but its measurements are not as expansive so it's really easy to handle. A modest 4.3-inch HD display produces are crisp and bright colours and results from the 8 mega-pixel camera are impressive. A 2 mega-pixel wide angle front-facing camera is also on board is great for video calling. Beats Audio sound technology has been included for the first time on a Windows Phone from HTC, enhancing sound performance and taking listening to music to a new level. There's no memory card slot so it won't suit users who need more than 16GB internal storage and it's not available in a 4G LTE version, but it's really is a great all-rounder combining high-end features and functionality.

These Windows Phone 8 flagships form what is undoubtedly an impressive line-up and will win over new fans. The new platform and how it is received will play a part in how successful they are, but we shouldn't underestimate influence of each manufacturer's spin on their WP8 devices.
