FINNISH PHONE MAKER Nokia has had a tough time since it rolled out its first Windows Phones this time last year. In the third quarter of this year the company managed to shift just three million of its Lumia branded Windows Phone devices, with buyers continuing to flock to IOS and Android.
However, if the company's big claims are to be believed, the Nokia Lumia 920 with Windows Phone 8 could be about to change all that. We tend to agree with the Finnish firm, as it looks like this is the handset that Nokia should have released a long time ago.
Design and build
The Nokia Lumia 920 is a cumbersome device, towering over the firm's last-generation Lumia 800 and 900 handsets. It measures a relatively thick 130x71x10.7mm and ignores the trend in featherlight mobiles with a weight of 185g, making it 70g heavier than the Apple Iphone 5.
At first we struggled with the Nokia Lumia 920's weight and disliked the fact that we couldn't easily stuff it into a pocket. However, we soon realised that it's not all that bad, as the handset feels very well made, and it quickly became comfortable and familiar to hold in the hand.
Much like its Windows Phone 7 powered siblings, the Nokia Lumia 920 boasts a great design. We got our hands on the glossy white model, which comes in a unibody polycarbonate chassis that has managed to cope with a few drops from our clumsy hands. Not to mention that it's great to look at, as whipping the device out of our bag on the tube certainly managed to get heads turning, for example.
If you're not so keen on the snow white model, the Lumia 920 is also available in black, red and yellow flavours, trying to offer customers colour choices similar to those of the vibrant HTC Windows Phone 8X handset.
Display
Nokia is always quick to boast that its smartphones come with the "best display on the market", and having used the Lumia 920 for a week, it's almost hard not to nod in agreement. On paper the screen is certainly impressive, as the handset features a 4.5in 768x1280 Nokia Puremotion HD+ IPS display with Nokia's Clearblack technology and "super sensitive" touch.
The Lumia 920 certainly bests its rivals when it comes to brightness. The screen produces extremely rich colours and super brightness levels. In fact, we found the screen too bright at times, due to Microsoft's limited screen setting options.
Nokia's Clearblack display technology means the screen shines when used outdoors too, topping its rivals when it comes to visibility in bright sunlight. However, here in the UK we're not all that used to bright sunlight, which is why we're pleased to see that the Lumia 920's "super sensitive" touch means that the display can be handled easily when wearing gloves.
