Apple earnings: It's all about iPhone sales - CNBC.com

Apple's earnings report, due after the bell on Monday, will shed some light on just how its iPhone sales are actually doing.

The tech giant, which released its iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C in late September, is expected to to announce iPhone sales above 34 million, said Ramone Llamas, a research manager at IDC.

(Read more: Free software, but that Apple device will cost you )

"About 34 to 35 million, that seems right about on track. Anything higher is going to be a huge surprise, but anything lower than that on the opposite end is going to say how soft that demand was in those July and August months," he said on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" Monday.

Apple's release of two new iPhone models this year has also spurred some concern about gross margins.

"Obviously, the lower priced phones have lower gross margin opposed to the higher end phone so how is that going to impact gross margin going forward. So I think that is a key issue going into this quarter and obviously next quarter, which will be the holiday season," said Dan Morgan, Synovus Trust senior vice president and portfolio manager, on "Squawk on the Street."

iPhone 5s and 5c now on sale in 35 more countries - Engadget

iPhone 5s and 5c now available in 35 more countries

If you were disappointed that your country missed out on the initial iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c launches, we have good news: you can (probably) buy the smartphones today. As promised, Apple has released both devices in 35 more countries, including Russia, South Korea and wide swaths of Europe. There hasn't been quite as much fanfare as there was in September, however. Our colleagues at Engadget Chinese covered the launch in Taiwan, and noticed that retail demand was mixed -- since many customers could pre-order their iPhones, only some stores had long queues. Those who haven't yet seen the new iPhones won't have to wait long, at least. Apple plans to ship the 5s and 5c to 16 more countries on November 1st, and the handsets should reach 100 nations by December.

GTA 5 iFruit App Now Available on Android - IGN

Android owners rejoice: Grand Theft Auto V's iFruit app is now available on Google Play.

First announced a few weeks ago, iFruit has only been available on iOS devices up to this point.

In addition to all the GTA info pushed to the app, there are two interactive features in iFruit. Firstly, it will allow you to create your ultimate vehicle in the game; from paint jobs, window tints, smoke colours, wheels, hoods and spoilers, you'll be able to manufacture the car of your dreams and then place an order. The next time you play Grand Theft Auto V, you'll find your customized set of wheels waiting in your garage. You'll also be able to use the app when playing, and create custom license plates for use in GTA V and GTA Online.

The iFruit will also include Tamagotchi-esque gameplay in which you remotely look after Chop, a dog belonging to one of Franklin's friends. You'll be able pet and feed him, as well as play games and teach him tricks, all of which will help you unlock rewards in GTA V. Keeping your puppy positive will result in him being more responsive in the main game, as well as sniff out hidden items on walks. You can even earn credits to buy him bespoke collars.

BlackBerry BBM gains 20m new users from first week on iPhone and Android - The Guardian

More than 20m people have downloaded and used BlackBerry's BBM messaging app on iPhone and Android smartphones in the week since it launched.

BlackBerry announced the milestone today, revealing that after 10m downloads in its first 24 hours, the newly cross-platform app picked up another 10m in the following six days.

The company says that BBM now has 80m monthly active users, with 60m on BlackBerry smartphones and 20m across iPhone and Android.

That's jumping the gun somewhat: while anyone who tries BBM in its first month on the new devices technically counts as a monthly active user, the real test will be if they stick around for longer. BlackBerry appears well aware of that.

"It is great to see so many people downloading BBM, but the true measurement for us is engagement – the connections being made and the conversations in which our BBM community engages," said BlackBerry's executive vice president of BBM, Andrew Bocking.

"The power of BBM has always been the active, real conversations and interaction that our customers enjoy. From here on out, we will focus on active users of BBM and will no longer focus on simple download numbers."

BBM's iPhone and Android versions initially used a virtual queuing system to restrict access to people who hadn't pre-registered their interest. BlackBerry has now removed this bar though, after a smooth launch week.

That's a far cry from the intended launch in September, when BlackBerry was forced to abandon its plans after a rogue version of BBM for Android leaked, causing problems for the service's ability to cope with increased traffic loads.

BBM has some way to go to catch up with WhatsApp, the current king of the messaging apps world. Earlier this month, WhatsApp said that it now has 350m monthly active users across all smartphones.
